Despite laying weed barrier fabric, weeds still emerge. This section explains how weeds break through via gaps, soil accumulation on the fabric surface, or existing deep-seated roots, and outlines proper installation and maintenance strategies.
Many users report that while weed barrier fabric performs well immediately after installation, weeds begin to sprout after six months to a year of use. People often attribute this to product quality issues, but in most cases, weed growth stems from improper installation or external environmental factors.
Weed barrier fabric suppresses weeds sprouting from the soil but cannot completely eliminate all weed growth. If deep-rooted perennial weeds are not cleared before installation, residual root systems can eventually push through the fabric. Additionally, the accumulation of dust and fallen leaves on the surface creates a thin layer of humus; airborne weed seeds landing on this layer can take root and grow directly on the fabric.
Seams are high-risk areas for weed growth. Insufficient overlap between fabric sections—or shifting caused by wind—can expose gaps, allowing seeds to fall into the soil below. A standard overlap of at least 10 cm is recommended; on slopes, the overlap should be wider, and ground anchors should be used to prevent the wind from lifting the fabric.
Sharp stones or residual tree roots on the ground can easily puncture the fabric, creating openings for weeds to grow through. Proper site preparation is essential; sharp, hard objects must be removed before installation. Any existing tears or holes can be repaired using fabric patches.
Routine maintenance involves regularly clearing fallen leaves and accumulated humus from the fabric surface. Any weeds growing along seams or edges can simply be pulled by hand, eliminating the need for large-scale herbicide application. Weed barrier fabric is a suppression tool, not a "set-it-and-forget-it" solution; long-term, stable weed suppression relies on proper site preparation, secure overlapping and anchoring, and regular cleaning.
